WEDNESDAY 19 May 2010
Innovative R&D Projects from University of Lodz

 9:30-11:30

1. Synthesis and characterization of metallic nanoparticles (Au, Ag, Cu, Pt) for biomedical and chemical applications. Antibacterial properties of nanosilver – possible applications: Pharmaceuticals, Drugs, Cosmetic applications, Food Chemistry (packaging), Household Chemistry (antibacterial protection of flat surfaces – walls, floors, etc. cleaning agents), Filters (air-conditioning), Textiles (antibacterial proofing). Nanogold as drug carriers – possible applications: Pharmaceutics, Cosmetics, Biotechnology, Cancer treatment.

Jarosław Grobelny  Ph.D., Grzegorz Celichowski Ph.D., Emilia Tomaszewska M.Sc., University of Łódź, Faculty of Chemistry, Department of Chemical Technology and Environmental Protection, Nanomaterials and Tribology Research Group.

2. Biomedical applications of dendrimers. Basic information on dendrimers' synthesis and biological properties. Presentation of main applications of dendrimers in diagnosis and therapy of numerous diseases, among them neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer and prion diseases as well as properties of dendrimers as drug and nucleic acids carriers in anticancer and anti-HIV targeted delivery will be described.

Prof. Maria Bryszewska,  Łukasz Hajdo Ph.D., University of Łódź, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, Department of General Biophysics, Division of Medical Biophysics

3. Method for analysis of biological material for presence and content of endo- and exogenous aminothiols.  The method takes advantage of high performance liquid chromatography technique with ultraviolet detection, and is capable to analyze tissues and physiological fluids of humans, animals and plants for contents of thiols such as: cysteine, homocyteine, glutathione, cysteinylglycine, homocysteine thiolactone, mesna, acetylocysteine, captopryl, methimazole, etc. The results can be utilize in clinical and experimental research, and in forensic investigations as well as in food industry. This proprietary method is a subject of several publications and patents.

Prof. Edward Bald, University of Łódź, Faculty of Chemistry, Department of Chemical Technology and Environmental Protection, Division of Environmental Chemistr

4. Genetically encoded system for recombinant protein purification- possible applications: Purification of recombinant protein with the value of biopharmaceutics, vaccines, antibodies, and industrial enzymes, produced with the usage of bacterial, plant, and other expression systems

Tomasz Kowalczyk M.Sc., Piotr Łuchniak Ph.D., and Prof. Andrzej K. Kononowicz, University of Łódź, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, Department of Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.

5.1. The analysis of cyanotoxins and eutrophication level in artificial water reservoirs in Lodz voivodeship  – the analysis of physicochemical parameters of water, elaboration of water treatment methods in case of industrial and community waste occurrence

5.2. The technology of transformation of phosphogypsum waste –  possible application in building industry (manufacturing of building materials eg. building mortar, mineral and resinous plaster), material for roads building (improver components and desiccant for soil), fillers for metallurgical industry

Dominik Szczukocki Ph.D., Marek Zieliński Ph.D., University of Łódź,  Faculty of Chemistry, Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, The Laboratory of Environmental Threat

 6. Sustainable Water Resources in the City of the Future

1. Scientific research and implementations in the field of urban river rehabilitation process.

2. Sustainable solutions for the use of sewage sludge in biomass and bioenergy production on willow plantations, providing additional economic income.

Iwona Wagner Ph.D., University of Łódź, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, Institute of Ecology and Environmental Protection
7.1. STM/AFM microscope (scanning tunelling microscope/atomic force microscope). Applications: Investigations – with precision of single atoms - of surfaces of metals, semiconductors, ceramics layers, nanopowders of metals, biological structures including DNA and cells membranes and many other.

Department offers possibility to perform measurement of samples. Looking for an industrial partner for production of precise mechanical components, and electronic montage.

7.2. Computer application for measurement of radiation dose distribution in interventional radiology. Application: Radiation protection of patient on interventional radiology/cardiology units. Software performs an analysis of scanned image obtained on a dosimetric film or foil irradiated during interventional radiology treatment. As a result we obtain the dose histogram for total field exposed or for chosen area. Software makes it possible to determine maximum entrance skin dose and to localise areas with dose within selected interval.

Prof. Andrzej Korejwo, University of Łódź, Faculty of Physics and Applied Informatics, Department of Nuclear Physics and Radiation Protection, Division of Medical Physics.

Prof. Wielisław Olejniczak University of Łódź, Faculty of Physics and Applied Informatics, Department of Solid State Physics, Division of Physics and Technology of Nanometric Structures
